From genetics to plate: the macka’s pastoral program

February 2026

For more than a century, the Mackenzie family has been building something that goes far beyond simply producing cattle. Today, Macka’s Pastoral continues that legacy through a vertically integrated beef program that spans every stage of production, from genetics to plate.

Building the Foundation

At Macka’s, our focus has always been on breeding reliable Angus females that perform in real-world commercial systems. Through disciplined sire selection, careful performance recording and a balanced approach to phenotype and EBVs, we are producing cattle that offer predictability, structural soundness and strong maternal traits. Consistency doesn’t happen overnight, it’s the result of years of informed breeding decisions.

A key highlight of our 2026 Commercial Female Sale is our Preg-Tested-In-Calf (PTIC) Heifers to Macka’s Vortex V94. Vortex, a son of Texas Iceman, combines structural integrity, depth of body, skin quality and balanced performance data. He is backed by a strong maternal line through his dam, Rosebud, who was introduced into our herd as a heifer and now has over 50 progeny on the ground.

A Program Built on Genetics

At the heart of the Macka’s program is a disciplined breeding philosophy built around three core principles:

Phenotype, Pedigree & Performance.

Through their seedstock herd, the Mackenzie family carefully select cattle with proven genetic strength, ensuring each generation continues to improve the overall consistency of the program.

Careful breeding decisions and ongoing data analysis allow the program to continually refine the traits that matter most — fertility, structural soundness, doing ability and carcass performance.

These genetics then flow through into the commercial herd, where the focus remains on producing efficient, productive cattle suited to real commercial environments.

The Commercial Herd

Macka’s Pastoral currently runs around 3,500 commercial cows, forming a major part of the operation.

These cows play an important role in the program, producing consistent, high-performing cattle that efficiently convert grass into quality beef.

The sires used within the Macka’s seedstock program continue to strengthen maternal traits while improving carcass performance, delivering cattle that are easy doing, productive and capable of laying down quality fat cover and marbling.

Consistency of product remains a key driver for the program.

Lines of heifers joined to Texas Iceman R725 will also be offered at this year's sale to be held at the Gloucester Saleyards on March 19.

PTIC heifers, joined to the $360,000 Australian record-priced bull Texas Thunderstruck T383, will be offered at this year's sale.

The influence of Texas Iceman has brought added consistency, temperament and performance across our program. Every mating is selected with commercial profitability in mind - focusing on fertility, growth, carcase quality and longevity. Our breeding decisions are guided by data, ensuring buyers can purchase with confidence.

When you step into the Macka’s Pastoral 2026 Autumn Commercial Female Sale, you’re not simply buying Angus females, you’re investing in proven genetics, backed by performance records and a breeding program designed to deliver long-term commercial returns.

Steady progress. Thoughtful breeding. Genetics built to last.

The Macka’s Commercial Female Sale

Each year, Macka’s Pastoral offers the opportunity for other producers to access these genetics through the Annual Commercial Female Sale.

Held in March at the Gloucester Saleyards, the sale features more than 500 vendor-bred Angus females developed within the Macka’s breeding program.

These females are bred for the traits that matter most in commercial operations:

  • Fertility

  • Doing ability

  • Maternal strength

  • Longevity and productivity

The sale reflects years of disciplined breeding and a program focused on building consistency from one generation to the next.

From Genetics to Plate

The final stage of the Macka’s story is the product itself.

Through their vertically integrated system, Macka’s Pastoral produces Macka’s Black Angus beef, recognised for its reliable carcass quality and excellent marbling.

Grading from MB2 through to MB7+, Macka’s beef is known for its tenderness, flavour and consistency — and is enjoyed by customers both in Australia and internationally.

It is the result of generations of careful breeding, responsible land management and a clear genetics-to-plate philosophy.

Six Generations. One Commitment.

While the Macka’s operation has evolved over time, the underlying philosophy has remained the same.

Disciplined breeding.
Careful data analysis.
A long-term vision.

More than 140 years after the Mackenzie family first began working the land, that commitment continues today.
